The Food and Beverage Series
Hokusai’s ‘The Wave’ has become a familiar image on things like a museum store coffee mug. I want to know what’s in that mug and who put it in there. The Food & Beverage Series is my way of paying tribute and modernizing the Ukiyo-e and Shin-Hanga art movements. When I started the process of researching the series I realized that the likes of Hokusai, Hiroshige, Yoshida and Kawase were depicting what they saw every day- the citizens, craftsmen and landscape of their environment. The goal of the series is to do the same for my own environment. Working in the hospitality industry has given me a unique ‘insiders’ look into this world as I have done most of these jobs. Through these works the viewer is transported to the sights, smells & flavors that I live and breathe. That latte that you gulp, your favorite bartender, your grandmother’s secret ravioli recipe, your favorite winery and the cupcakes for your children’s birthday all have a story behind them.
Through woodburning (rather than woodcuts), pencil and ink, the character and craftsmanship of these people are brought to life. The Food & Beverage Series is an intersection of two life-long obsessions: food & art.
